Artist Review: Savage 100 – “Why So Savage?” Mixtape

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

Versatility, tranquility, and an indescribable ambience is something you’ll hear on Savage 100‘s mixtape Why So Savage?

Each song offers up something different, yet their formula and group-effort approach keeps very good consistency. Their opening track “Did It All” is a perfect example of the ambience. First off, a female rapper that can sing her own hooks is definitely a treat, and Angel Alei really brings this song to life. Her flow is very witty, her content is clever, and she shows a lot of backbone behind the track’s initial beat.

Next track, “2Nite”, with Shon P also brings forth a great edge to the same formula. And it’s another track that shows the differentiation between Savage 100 and some other run-of-the-mill Hip Hop group. Very clever lyrics, and a flow that takes you up stream. This is a great follow-up to its predecessor.

My personal favorite, “Bounce”, is definitely the highlight of the mixtape. This is by no means an original concept, but the lyrics are mesmerizing. This concept has never been executed quite this way. Cause, truth be told, I went into it with the “oh great, another booty song”, but after giving this a listen, I was caught off guard with how this track’s story-telling method completely sold me on this song immediately. This is one of those songs where it’s not always what you write about, but how you write it. As well as present it. And turns out, this one just happens to be my favorite.

Now “New Me Who This” and “M.C.G.T.” are definitely the bangers of the mixtape. They are two great songs to conclude this release, and parallel each other beautifully. These tracks, along with the others before them, are all tied perfectly together with a chemistry that gives this entire record high likability factors. All three members, Shon P, Angel Alei, and Coda are very well displayed and shine very bright on this mixtape, and I’m absolutely eager to hear more from this group. This is definitely something more easy on the ears, rather than noisy and over-the-top. I love Savage 100‘s signature sound, it’s definitely something new. Take a listen to this record for yourself and enjoy what each song offers. There’s definitely something on here for any kind of Hip Hop fan, no matter what breed of the genre they praise.
