Artist Review: Trey Poppi – “The First Mixtape” LP

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

These younger artists have been crushing it lately. And we can add Trey Poppi to that list with his newest release, The First Mixtape.

Inspire, motivate, learn, and create! Reads the motto on the cover art. And that’s exactly what the buzz is all about with The First Mixtape. It may be his first, but surely won’t be his last. This collection of tracks ranges from hypnotic beats, ambient swells to track bangers and street anthems. And his versatile vocal style always keeps you on your feet.

One standout component of this record is the ability to diligently blend both old school Hip Hop and today’s modern Rap sensibilities. His songs also have hints of Jazz and Motown-era R&B influences as well when it comes to some of the hooks and beats. Trey‘s voice also resonates nicely on every track with his rhythmic tones and cleverly witty rhyming techniques – the perfect ingredients to make a flavorful Hip Hop Release.

There’s also a lot of originality on this record, and Trey‘s multifaceted voice makes this happen. He has a younger voice, but doesn’t give you the vibe that he’s an up and comer. He can easily sit alongside Soulja Boy and some of the other young hood superstars that made it to the top of the game at a very young age. It wouldn’t surprise me if exactly that happened for Trey.

Overall, this is a solid release and a big treat if you don’t know this artist yet. The First Mixtape has an array of different tracks that are charismatic, fun, and never ends up being repetitive. You’ll love every song, and you’ll be blasting this record to your friends everywhere.

The First Mixtape is available on several digital music retailers and streaming platforms. Take a listen yourself and you’ll see why Trey Poppi is gonna be doing big things in the shortcoming. You’ll be more than happy you did.
