Article by: Justyn Brodsky

Combining an integration of smooth rhymes, charismatic vocals and a multi-genre approach, we get an innovative blend of Hip Hop with elements of Soul and Alternative with Fadetheblackk‘s newest single “Visions (feat. B*Star).”

With great production value and a soul-infused beat carrying the torch, this song is anything but ordinary. It’s a multifaceted creation of something artistic, inventive and takes Hip Hop into a new modern realm.

With each verse breathing life in the form of a straight and subtle flow, you can hear FTB‘s natural talent loud and clear with his ability to articulate his lyrics in all the right places. His tone is catchy, his melody-driven chorus is anthemic, and his spirit in the track never wavers.

Fadetheblackk‘s current single is distributed by Warner Music Indie platform Level and he has always been behind the scenes creating and working with many artists in today’s music industry since 2011. So with years under his belt, it’s not a huge surprise that this song is as versatile as it is, but it surely is a treat.

If you’re looking for something outside of your everyday Hip Hop single that drops from every corner of the street, then “Visions” is the track for you. It’s a song that indicates that FTB is not riding any kind of bandwagon – he’s bringing his very own creation to life; something that you don’t hear every day and a taste of something fresh, yet still identifiable at the same time.

Music Theory: Boss Piano – A Lesson In Cadences

Article by: Justyn Brodsky

It is nearly impossible for any piano player to not hear the word cadence at least once in their life. Before explaining the cadence meaning, I will start with the reference of what a musical phrase is.

As you might already know, it is a musical thought composed with four measures length in most cases, and incomplete also. A cadence is a chord progression composed usually of at least 2 chords that ends a phrase or a part of a piece of music.

The cadence has a really important role in any piece of piano sheet music because it gives a sense of resolution for that rhythm. There are some types of cadences that are authentic, deceptive, half, and plagal. They are divided into two groups: finished cadences and unfinished cadences.

The authentic cadence is the movement from the chord V to I of the key center. It is usually written V-I and is the most common and most frequently used cadence. For an example, when it comes to the C Major scale, try playing from V (G) to I (C) and you will notice by yourself how a great finish sounds, because the authentic cadence is also known as a perfect cadence and is well-known for its most finished contribution.

When it comes to the deceptive cadence, it is good to know that it’s also called the interrupted cadence. The name is very suggestive, as in this case, it ends on an unexpected chord. The music sounds reminiscent of something interrupting the piece. For this one, the most common chord progression is from chord V to chord VI, also written as V-VI. For an example, using the A Major scale, the chords are V which in this case is the key E and VI which is the key F sharp minor. Play it and listen carefully to get a familiarity to this type of cadence, so you will be able to use it in your own piano tabs.

When it comes to unfinished cadences, it is easy to anticipate that the sound will be unfinished. This happens because the unfinished cadences don’t end on chord I. By using an unfinished cadence at the end of a phrase in a piece of piano sheet music, it will give the listener the feeling that there is more to come in the next section and that the piece is not over.

In the group of unfinished cadences there is the half cadence. It is also known as imperfect cadence and it ends on chord V, while it can start on chord I, II or IV. For an example, in the G Major scale, we take the chords I (which is key G) to chord V (which is key D). Listen and you will notice that this is not the end, it’s more like a “wait for the next part” kind of feeling. When it comes to plagal cadence, the progression is from chord IV to chord I, also found written as IV-I.

Cadences are a great way to practice and develop piano techniques, and are also considered part of the little things that form the basis of piano for any player.

Article by: Justyn Brodsky

The type of artists that really capture your attention with their artistic merit and brilliant execution of musicianship are very, very few and far between. Ignacio Peña is one of those rare gems.

This Puerto Rican rocker is no stranger to the industry at all though, and is completely multifaceted from writing, recording, performing, producing, directing, media creation and more. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Peña rose to fame in the Latin market with the release of his debut album “El Mundo al Revés” in 2000 and the subsequent tour which saw him perform festivals in Argentina, Venezuela, Panama and the United States. Peña‘s albums have garnered critical acclaim and are considered by many to be some of the best rock music to come out in Spanish.

From 2015 through 2017, Peña has been nominated for five NATAS Suncoast Chapter Emmy Awards, winning two for the WIPR-TV Short Subject documentaries “Por Qué Conmemoramos” (Why We Commemorate) and “Soy De Una Raza Pura” (I Am From A Pure Race) respectively.

Now fully loaded with his next collection of rock anthems, his newest album creation Songs For The Fall Of An Empire is one that delivers a concept about the history of debt, and really delves deep into telling a story effectively. With two singles accompanied by music videos for each, the visual aspect adds unwavering power, depth and anticipation as these songs truly keep you at the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The first single/music video for “The Same Replies” is an explosive introduction to what this album is about, as well as how the music resonates with it. With an eye-catching intro that locks you into pure anticipation, this move-trailer-like intro to the song is masterful, mind bending and astonishing all on its own as the perfect powerful entrance into a song. With ambient guitar leads, melodic chord projections and soaring harmony-driven vocals, this track hits you in ways you’d never think possible.

Shifting from Peña and his band members to the song’s visual concept is what makes this video one of the highest-energy experiences you could ask for. Every verse has incredible pacing with thought-provoking, intelligent lyrics with a dynamic rhythm section driving the song forward and smashing its way into a chorus that is melodic, catchy and suitable to any rock listener that appreciates an unforgettable chorus. The dark elements of the song really carries the weight of the song’s concept as well, and the production value couldn’t be better. This is a song and video that will stay with you even after it’s over. It’s one you have to see to believe.

Bridging over to the second single/video on the album, we get a thrust of heavy ambience with the song “Sound The Alarm” which carries over from the previous track as continuity of the same concept the album has been centralizing. From strong yet subtle verses that continue to tell a very political and supercharged story that gets the listener to pay extra close attention, we get one of the biggest buildups in anticipation before this song’s extremely in-your-face and most highlighted chorus yet.

From ascension to attention, the energy really flies high and is definitely one of the best written rock choruses of this caliber you could come by. With heavy-gain guitars and rhythmic riffs that drive with a force along with a pounding rhythm section, this climactic track is definitely gonna be one of your favorites of the album, and really puts the defining factors of the song right into the forefront where it’s most effective as a whole.

“Sound The Alarm” releases on September 17th, and is definitely gonna set the bar high for concept rock albums altogether, as well as videos.

A new song from Songs For The Fall Of An Empire will be unleashing every three weeks until the album release date of December 10th. Mark your calendars for this masterpiece.

Artist Review: Cherry Ilex Sound – “Take Me Away” Single

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

What’s interesting about the collective of Cherry Ilex Sound is the fact that the folks behind the project (and name) are also a multifaceted professional studio run by elite musicians. That’s why we are stoked to be writing this review of their new single “Take Me Away”, a pop rock feel-good track led by the studio owner and anchor songwriter Kevin Bailey Jr.

Just like us at Artist Reach, this is another music services platform with a “for musicians, by musicians” motto, which is why this song encompasses high quality authenticity and production value all wrapped up into one catchy tune that any alt/rock listener can appreciate.

Accompanied by a very visually cinematic lyric video, “Take Me Away” takes us back to a time when songwriting quality was higher on artist’ priority lists. Something that’s well executed, versatile and naturally gifted in talent. With a sound reminiscent to the 90s and early 2000s era, Cherry Ilex Sound delivers us a track that is melodic, charismatic and will get easily stuck in your head.

With clean guitar riffs and a punchy rhythm section carrying the torch throughout this track from beginning to end, this song has an unwavering presence of catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics and a climactic chorus that sticks with you even after the song is over. The thing we love the most is how fresh and natural their signature sound is. The track focuses more on presenting a high quality mix and emphasizing all the right elements in the correct places of the song; which is what makes this single the gem that it really is. The song doesn’t hide behind a mask or any kind of digital saturation whatsoever. We get a catchy tune with great lyrics with a fantastic mix, all straight forward without a gimmick.

We highly recommend this song as well as the Cherry Ilex Sound studio and collective all in one. Everything is self-produced, self-written, and highly eclectic. And when you listen to “Take Me Away” yourself, we guarantee you’ll catch the same feel-good sound that we did. We can’t recommend it highly enough:
