Artist Review: Suburban Vermin

Review by: Justyn Brodsky & Dave Welsh

An energetic old-school stylized punk rock trio from Seattle with chicks filling the guitar and drum roles? Sign me up.

Just like Dead Kennedys before them, this punk trio has the ability to draw you in just with their controversial band name alone: Suburban Vermin. Witty, clever, and eye-brow raising, the curiosity to hear them just becomes morbid.

So after doing just that, I couldn’t help but admire this band’s instant-classic sound that leaves you relieved that bands like Suburban Vermin still exist. A band that is 100% authentic, and keeping the music that Seattle is known for alive and well. Their sound is a plug-in-and-just-fucking-play kind of approach without the need of any kind of synthesized theatrics; straying far from mainstream antics.

And that’s what punk has always been about, and for a band in this era to still stick with that same formula along with the values that corroborate it makes Suburban Vermin a band that deserves undivided attention from all true punk/Seattle-scene fans out there that still remember that the scene where this band comes from was, and always will be, iconic. And Suburban Vermin belongs in that collection of bands that have contributed to the genre and music scene as some of the most influential.

The production value is a perfect showcase of their authentic and traditional persona as a band, and the male and female vocal leads compliment their sound beautifully and add a very charismatic and signature style that also gives them a lot of room for versatility as well. Basically, if you’re a fan of the Seattle scene’s most influential bands (both mainstream and underground), then Suburban Vermin is a band you’ll be adding to your list of favorites. They’re a rare gem, and a breath of fresh air that true punk rock is still alive. It’s bands like them that keep it not only alive, but going strong as well.

Artist Review: Hefe Heetroc

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

When it comes to versatility, energy, craft, and witty lyrics with a space-themed EDM Rock influence to Hip Hop, you just might do justice to Hefe Heetroc artistic merit.

One thing is for sure, I haven’t heard something quite as raw and original as this in quite some time. So if you’re looking for new food for the ear with a shot of adrenaline, then Mr. Heetroc is your draft pick. His breed of Hip Hop is not only fresh, but it also sustains elements of the 90s glory days, old school Rap, and today’s Indie scene with a very heavy edge.

This is definitely a genre bender. His track “I Already Got That” is the perfect demonstration of the energy-driven EDM and Rock/Metal chemistry that is not only cleverly structured into Hip Hop, but multilayered and multifaceted as well. First off, if you’re a fan of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, then this is definitely for you. We have a high-range vocal approach that is very commercial-worthy, but has a very indie forefront that showcases great charisma, intelligently crafted verses, and daring beat structures that will leave you at the edge of your seat. So if you want something in-your-face and merciless, then this is your anthem.

Carrying the torch over to the next track, “Addiction Tonight”, we still get the perfect EDM factor that puts the outfit on Hefe Heetroc to give him the character he deserves, and the originality that’s been displayed. Toned down a bit from the last track, we have another genre-bender with Heetroc‘ signature vocal style that puts his likability factors on overdrive.

And same thing goes for “Deep Space Stars Galaxy”. Another charismatic track with great multi layers of energy and charismatic chemistry. This surrounds more of the overall theme of what Hefe Heetroc carries with him as a lyricist, but still shows different angles of his craft and overall defining factors. Regardless, you’re gonna find something energetic, clever, and completely compelling.

There’s so much you could say about this take on Hip Hop, but regardless of how you find the words, you’ll only have the best things to say about Hefe Heetroc. Here’s some advice going into it though: strap yourself in for the ride.

Artist Review: Awaiting The Answer

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

Heavy chugs, soaring guitar tones, melodic vocals with a powerful rhythm section makes Awaiting The Answer one of those bands that keeps it heavy, and keeps it completely real.

With a sound that can be comparable to Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine, and Atreyu, this Canadian quintet shows no disappointment in the musicianship factor. Setting all post production antics aside, this band is a big breath of fresh air. Their song “No Innocence” is a perfect example of how naturally gifted the band is. With dueling guitars that set the heavy tone for the rhythm section, and vocals that lead the pack altogether with both melodic approaches and shattering screams that grab you by the throat, you get a grasp of the perfect balance with their take on the melodic-metal core sound.

The best part to me is the simplicity. No EDM implementation, or experimental studio theatrics. This band did it the old fashion way that never fails. Step one: write powerful songs. Two: perfect them and polish them. And three: go into the studio, plug in, and track everything as it was intended. Your result will be nothing short of amazing, because there’s no unnecessary additives in this mix. This is a band that truly sticks to the roots of what made melodic metal the unstoppable genre it is today.

This genre is everywhere, but it’s very hard to find a band that can still truly pull off what this genre was really meant to be. Awaiting The Answer is one of those bands. And it’s refreshing as hell.

Artist Review: Virtual Zero

Review by: Justyn Brodsky & Chi Brodsky

A 90s influence that brings us back to our glory days; no matter the genre and with an insatiable determination to absolutely be an innovative presence, possibly with a premonition or perhaps a futuristic mindset of what’s to come. Some might say…

ANDREW ZERO: Band Perspective

Virtual Zero showcases a unique cross between grunge and pop rock, changing dynamics along the way. Nobody else sounds like us. Not in Portland, not in the mainstream. Just when you think you’re listening to a grunge song, out comes the church organ, a panflute, or a choir of synthetic voices coming from our keyboardist we truly have an original sound that is hard to match. The band was first formed in 1998 from a name change from Irish Monkey. As Virtual Zero we started off as a metal band comprised with a DJ, which everyone seemed to have in the 90s. The band broke up not even making it to a set of over 6 original songs. Lead vocalist Andrew Zero (Stephens) wanted to be back in the music scene ten years after leaving it and brought the name Virtual Zero back. After several lineup, the band solidified to the lineup today in early 2016. Our debut album The Fall can be found at cdbaby.com/cd/virtualzero3 . Instead of having 6 songs as the old lineup managed, The Fall has 16 songs with a few more under our belts. With all the bands in the city of Portland offering you music, no one can touch ours. We stand alone. Are you a zero? Do people think of you as a nobody? Its only Virtual. Find your voice with Virtual Zero.”

A perfect sum-up of Andrew/Virtual Zero is a story to behold. Many hours of writing, composing, riffing, and everything in between to showcase many sides to Andrew and his full-one-man-band efforts; be it compositions, singing, releases that has aspired and inspired many, has only pushed the bar higher for Andrew and his releases/projects in the shortcoming.

With the amazement this elite musician has in store in the shortcoming, and with a new year in its beginnings, be sure to connect with them on all Social Media & Music Outlets such as Spotify, ITunes, and all other major online radio platforms as you explore them. So please keep an ear open for new music, and a watchful eye as he plans for a very busy performing schedule for 2017 and beyond.
