Artist Review: (dIG) dEM iSBY gIRLS – “School Days”

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

Glistening vocals, ambient beat structures, and a futuristic hypnotic vibe that combines the best of yesterday’s and today’s R&B is what makes dEM iSBY gIRLS (aka dIG) a gem within their own right with their freshest single “School Days”.

The voices are subtle, magnetic, and brings you to a realm of a laid-back feel that really encompasses a sound that is very visceral, ethereal, and multifaceted. Their versatile approach in “School Days” is not your every day track; it resonates with a style that touches on originality and familiarity, giving their audience a taste of something new yet still identifiable. The vocal personas also touch on different factors, landscapes, and really give each vocal component a life of its own, which is what makes dIG a group that lives up to their name. You will dig them, and really find your listener’s niche with their hypnotic style of singing.

Another part of this song is the likability factors – the sing doesn’t carry on too long, has great runtime in its duration, and is a track you can come back to time and time again. It has that staying power – the power to really stay with you even after the song is over. Regardless, you will find unconditional love for this song; and keep you in anticipation of what dIG comes out with next. They won’t disappoint.

Artist Review: Spursy – “Neon” Single

Review by: Justyn W. Brodsky

Some of today’s artists really know how to put a true edge to the reminiscence of yesterday’s 80s iconic sound without succumbing to plagiarism techniques or obvious direct similarities to the music of any era, but executed more in a way where the artist’s homage to the era is more reinvented or reimagined in their own way and brought out in a mainstream realm of quality. And this is exactly the type of feat Spursy brings to the table with his signature sound from his single “Neon”.

This track definitely has a glow from the very beginning of the track, and never wavers from the concept’s funky riffs, tight knit rhythm section and Duran Duran style vocals – however all executed in a way that is compellingly original. The vocal range and lyrical outbursts of Spursy is completely versatile, multifaceted, and never wavers from its authenticity, balance and composure.

Each verse is doused with that 70s/80s synthy sound we’ve all come to know, love, and miss dearly. So it’s a refreshing and tasteful feel throughout the vocal combination. And once all of this takes place, the song’s structure melts us with an insatiably earth halting chorus that truly ties it all together to make “Neon” light up the room, your earphones, and everything in between that puts this song in the forefront of your listening experience. You truly can not go wrong with this song.

From the old school songwriting sensibilities to today’s mainstream production quality – it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Artist Review: Barcenilla – “Timeless” Single

Article by: Justyn W. Brodsky

When it comes to being a vocalist, you can be trained since birth, all day, every day, from dawn to dusk. And you most certainly will achieve some results. But then (not to sound like Simon Cowell here or anything), you just have it. And what exactly is it? Exactly. You just answered it in your own mind. And when it comes to truly having it; be it a beautiful voice, an ear for detail, head-turning looks, a craft for incredible melody choices and songwriting techniques and everything in between, Philippines-based Pop/R&B artist, Barcenilla, goes above and beyond the standard of today’s average, or even eyebrow-raising, trifecta.

With a remarkably organic and word-of-mouth fan base that has amassed the rising artist over 90,000 Facebook fans, 10,000 Twitter followers and over 26,000 Instagram followers, it’s no surprise that Barcenilla‘s signature sound has made an insatiable impact with listeners all over the world; hankering for that next vital voice and fresh image that truly captivates them beyond the realm of something run-of-the-mill or passive. This is where Barcenilla truly stands out – he is that next musical fix you’ve been looking for, and you have to hear him to believe it.

His most recent gem “Timeless”, which officially released December 1st, is just like the title suggests. It’s a timeless song that has not only the perfect production value to showcase Barcenilla‘s artist merit, but also shows several angles of what his vocal range is capable of, all topped off with astonishing melody placements and dynamics of delivering his strengths as a vocalist in all the right places.

Reminiscent of a vocal approach that could draw comparisons to iconic heavyweights like Prince, George Michael, and even subtle touches of today’s musical heartthrobs like Bruno Mars, Barcenilla has a tone and range that is natural, visceral, and resonates with a style that shares equal parts originality and familiarity; giving his audience a taste of something fresh yet still familiar. Which is an impressive feat in today’s world of music where almost everything has been done in some form or fashion.

But with Barcenilla, things take a natural and formulated turn in music, and “Timeless” is the perfect way to showcase his abilities both as an artist and stage persona. It’s about execution for him, and not what you sing, but how you sing it. The type of artist that could hear a poorly put-together song from another singer, erase all vocal tracks, and turn something that was essentially a flop into an absolute diamond. It’s all about the execution and Barcenilla strongly utilizes this component in his songs; and we hear that throughout every bar and measure in “Timeless”.

On top of hearing a brilliant Single with pop sensibilities. “Timeless” also delves into tastefully blended Hip Hop and R&B additives as well, giving it the perfect edge to almost any music listener that can appreciate the better side of today’s mainstream approach. It’s a song that doesn’t leave a stone unturned and really brings out the best of Barcenilla. From the looks of it, this artist is going places in 2019. So you’ll definitely wanna check out this single which is currently available on iTunes, Spotify among many others, and keep a close eye on his endeavors. You’ll be glad you did.

Press Release: Metal Outfit Our Dying World Release Two Brand New Viscerally Powerful Singles

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

Some metal bands in this era just tackle the genre just for the sake of it. Because the “scene kids” are into it and screaming is all the hype. But then, you run into a band like Our Dying World, proving one record at a time that true metal is a genre that isn’t going to die anytime soon, thanks to bands like them and others of their caliber.

Reminiscent of a style comprised of Opeth and the earlier albums of Killswitch Engage, the band’s newest anchor single, “Liberation”, is an onslaught of heavy-driven face melting lead guitar chops, vicious vocals and a pounding rhythm section that could tear the roof off your house. Their sound, however energetically provoking, is very orchestrated and beautifully arranged with melodic songwriting structures, tightly knit guitar work and an anthemic signature sound that really defines them as more than just a metal band. It’s the type of song that could be diligently covered as a classical piano track and showcases a type of music theory foundation. And that’s what truly makes “Liberation” a triumphant song – it can be performed in many different angles and really brings out the band’s true versatility.

Their debut and prior single, “Post Mortem”, is far more straight forward for almost any metal fan. This climactic track comes out swinging and never wavers from its heavy and rhythmic grooves. It’s more fast paced, in your face and will just about bring you to your knees. Accompanied by a very compelling YouTube lyric video, this song is heavy just much as it is fascinatingly and dynamically structured. The higher pitched and at-times guttural vocals really solidify the band’s overall style and just gives it that badass nature that we yearn with all metal bands we come across, and Our Dying World executes their type of niche within this realm perfectly and really makes them a stand out of their kind. And those are the two words that really give a band or Artist the platform to make it to greater heights in the industry – stand out.

These songs are a unrelenting and grab you by the throat from the very first listen. Each song has their own approach as well as elements that separate them as something different, but you can still tell it’s coming from the same band. And that’s when you truly know you have come across a real gem of its kind. Hearing a band really tackle different angles, elements and the overall chemistry to blend together a concoction, but close enough within its boundaries to still know that it’s the same foundation to the ingredients being used.

If this is the first time discovering Our Dying World, you’re in for one hell of a surprise. Brace yourself.

Artist Review: frafri – Thank You For So Much, Sorry For So Little” LP

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

A lot of producers & creators showcase their best work through their musical visions and audio expressions through sound, especially when it comes to the instrumental aspect. frafri‘s 15-track LP Thanks For So Much, Sorry For So Little is a clear demonstration into the mind of exactly that – the thought process and execution of instrumental expression and the moods and structures that parallel the songwriting structures as a way to get into the mind of a creator.

And that’s the kind of LP frafri has put together, a record of many visceral moods, innovative beats, and the brilliant use of guitar sequences and synthesizers that really set the tone for each track. From subtle buildups, explosively climactic measures and anthemic melody choices throughout the album, each song delves into a form of expression that steers along the lines of ominous emotions, and feelings that are thought provoking.

And that’s one of my favorite parts about frafri‘s latest collection of tracks – the ambience and versatility that really sets this album apart from anything else within its caliber. But I don’t necessarily mean “experimental” when it comes to that particular term, because these songs are diligently put together and definitely brilliantly structured. They flow together like chapters in a book, and scream loudly with narratives even though this album doesn’t have. But the biggest component to this record is the creative use of instruments – from introverted guitar parts to a vast array of keys and synths providing the atmosphere. After listening to all 15-tracks in their entirety, you begin to draw the full picture in your mind. The full picture that this album delivers a full, flavorful sound with wholesome totality – and you find yourself resonating with every measure both musically, and visually.

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

A gem like Sassy Vee is a girl with a vision and a girl with a vibe. She’s an absolute trifecta in the bigger picture altogether – she has class, beauty, and insatiable talent that is passionately utilized in her own signature style of music that is compellingly catchy, lyrically visceral and atmospherically ambient. And she showcases these very crucial components in her anchor singles “I Should Go” and “Emotional”. Two tracks with different eclectic approaches, but diligently executed by Sassy herself no matter what elements each song presents itself with. These are two very versatile tracks that truly bring you into the musical realm that Sassy delivers to the forefront; and never wavers from her flavorful sound she carries with her throughout every song that leaves you refreshed and aching to hear more.

“I Should Go” is a great mid-pacing yet subtle song that serves up as a flavorful modern treat into today’s Pop sensibility with Indie elements. From lyrically visceral and eased-up verses that beautifully showcase Sassy‘s voice as more of a clever and delicate buildup, the verses really caress her vocal textures and tenderness that really shows her authenticity. It’s the perfect buildup of soft-sung narratives before the powerful chorus jumps in to tie the song together with Sassy‘s wholesome vocal dubs and mid-to-high range melodies. She truly grasps onto the song’s aura and key signature to write and perform the perfect balance and composure for this track, and really puts her strengths right out to the forefront. She clearly has a knack for writing vocal parts that are not only catchy, but compelling as well, and really puts forth a style that touches on equal parts originality and familiarity, giving her audience a taste of something fresh yet still identifiable.

Her second single “Emotional” is more R&B-infused and reminiscent of the classic Motown Records era with tasteful mixtures of today’s more authentic and eclectic Soul inspired artists that perform R&B the way it was meant to be. The track is more charismatic, fun, and shows a different angle to Sassy‘s lyrical techniques and artistic merit. It’s a track that any R$B listener can appreciate, including previous generations that witnessed the manifestation of the genre, and the components that came with it. “Emotional” is also a song that truly sings from, and speaks to the soul. It resonates with the truly passionate music fan that wants to delve into an artist’s true core, to see and hear who they really are as a songwriter. All the while relating to the song in a whole, and finding out how they can identify with it.

Overall, Sassy‘s singles are triumphant, meaningful and really bring out different angles of her talent and songwriter. She’s a rare gem among many artists of her caliber, and has a very promising prospect of what 2019 has in store for her, as well as beyond. By the sounds of it – Sassy Vee is not going anywhere, anytime soon. It’s artists like her that today’s music really yearns for.
